Moissanite versus Diamond in Jewelry

Moissanite was first discovered in Arizona in a crater where a meteor landed in the 1800s. Now it is mostly made in labs and looks quite like diamonds. It might look like a diamond but chemical composition is very different.

Compare the two

When comparing moissanite vs diamond you first learn that diamonds are made of pure carbon while moissanite is made up of silicon carbide. But although their chemistry is different, they both:

  • Shimmer
  • Sparkle
  • Shine

If you are buying a ring and buy one with moissanite, it will out sparkle a diamond. A moissanite gemstone ranks higher on both the RI index (brilliance refractive) and what is called “fire dispersion”. A diamond ranks around 2.42, but moissanite ranks a bit higher at 2.65. It also ranks higher than diamonds in fire dispersion. Although popular, many find that the fire dispersion and brilliance of the moissanite is all most too much.

Durability

A diamond is the hardest occurring material on earth that occurs naturally. It is almost impossible to break, scratch or damage. On the other hand, moissanite is also extremely hard – ranks just after diamond on what is called the Moh’s scale. While diamonds are a perfect 10, a moissanite gem ranks between 9.25 and 9.5. There is not much difference in the durability of both these gems.

Cost

The major difference is in price, with diamonds costing a lot more than a moissanite gemstone making any piece of jewelry with the moissanite in it less expensive. If you are looking for all the benefits of a diamond without spending a small fortune, then you might consider a moissanite ring or jewelry piece. You will find that you will be paying a fraction of the cost to a diamond that is comparable. In fact, in some cases, there is a 50% difference in cost. So, when jewelry shopping you might want to look at both before you decide.
